Student Profile: Arthur and Margaret Lester
Margaret and Arthur Lester are testament to the fact that golf is a game for all ages. The Riversdale GC members have been married for 56 years and picked up the game quite late. Once they caught the golf bug though there was no looking back and the couple are still going strong well into their 70’s.
Margaret has enjoyed considerable success at the club level. Playing off a handicap of 18 she played pennant for the 2nd team which won the flag. She has also been the C Grade Champion, the B Grade Champion and the Veteran Champion at her club. To top it all off, she is a proud member of the hole-in-one club. Although she feels her handicap is slipping a bit (now 23) she still enjoys working on her game with Bann Lynch Golf coach Michelle Howard. Arthur has started dedicating more time to improving his golf gameĀ since retiring and loves the challenge of bringing his handicap down (now 26).
The Lesters have 3 daughters- only Arlene plays golf, however their grandchildren Jason (14) and Sally (10) areĀ looking to take up the game and perhaps join them on one of their golfing holidays in Merimbula where they play 18 holes of golf every day.
Arthur, Margaret and Arlene were all praise for our Michelle Howard, from whom they say they have learned so much about the game. “It’s a pity we didn’t have Michelle from the start of our golf instead of teaching ourselves to play” says Margaret. “We have all learned so much from her”.
